Jump in jobless
PA Wellington At the end of June, 53,461 people were unemployed or on special work, an increase of 4277 on the figure for the end of May. The number of registered unemployed jumped to 33,725 at; the end of June, the highest number since the Depression of the 19305. As well, people on Govern-ment-assisted job-creation schemes at the end of June numbered 19,736, according to Labour Department statistics. This was an increase of 447 on the number employed under the programme at May 30.
