Cyclists in tunnel

Sir, — I am pleased to see the efforts of the Christchurch Transport Board in attempting to provide a service for cyclists through the Lyttelton Tunnel (“The Press,” June 19). Their efforts are to be doubly commended because they are not obliged to provide any service whatever through the tunnel. It is in no way to the credit of the Ministry of Works and Development or National Roads Board that they have made no effort to accept responsibility for providing cycle access. Because of its $9.5 million surplus, the Roads Board should be taken to task for its disdain of cyclists. We are now facing further N.R.B. brick walls over the proposed (sic) cycle subway in Annex Road. Will the N.R.B. ignore cyclists’ demands again? — Yours, etc., TIM KERR. June 19, 1980.
