Overseas newsprint shortage
NZPA Singapore The strong overseas market for newsprint which is boosting the sales position of New Zealand forestry companies has been emphasised in Singapore. The Singapore “Straits Times’’ group of newspapers announced a special limitation on the size of its newspapers because of newsprint shortages.
In a front-page statement, the group’s general manager (Mr Denis Tay) said supplies of newsprint were extremely tight in spite of price increases imposed during 1980, the latest to be effective in July. • He referred to the closing of a newsprint mill in British Columbia, Canada; the possibility of industrial action at newsprint mills in east Canada; and the ■ effects of a national strike in Sweden on the newsprint industry. “Spot purchases of newsprint are rare and where a source is available, quoted prices are extremely high and newsprint quality is not assured,” Mr Tay said.
