Purple Boy wins Aust. Steeples

NZPA Melbourne The New Zealand-bred Purple Boy is favourite for the Grand National Steeples at Flemington next month after his win in the $12,000 Australian Steeplechase (3350 m at Sandown on Saturday. The seveh-year-old In The Purple gelding, trained by C. S. Hayes, just lasted to score by a short-head from viv’s Choice, with Spy Catcher five lengths back third.

It was only Purple Boy’s second start over fences. He carried 62kg but will come down to 59kg for the 5000 m Grand National Steeplechase On July 12. The 3300 m Australian Hurdles also went to a New Zealand-bred, the six-year-old Sugar Apple gelding Massuk. He bolted away with the $12,000 event after hitting the front at the 1100 m mark.
