Good bull clearance at S.I. sale

Considering the decline in beef cattle numbers and the rather depressed beef market, there was a reasonably good demand for Beef Shorthorn and Hereford bulls at the. South Island sale at Timaru.

A pleasing feature of the sale was that almost the whole of the offering of the two breeds was disposed of under the hammer. Floods in the south prevented some of the bulls, particularly the Shorthorns, reaching the sale.

It was as well the sale was held inside as conditions were unpleasent around the pens. Some cars had to be given a helping hand when it came to leaving the sodden car-parks. A large gallery followed the sale.

The highest price of the das was paid in the Beef Shorthorr section for a bull from I. M. Phil lips (Longford. Darfield) whicl went to Chapman Brothers (Ka kahu, Geraldine) for $2lOO. For' 12 Beef Shorthorn bulls out of. 16 offered the average price was $1129, which was down about $22, or less than 2 percent, on last year’s average for 18. Selling from $1409 to the tor price 1. M. Phillips averaged $1750 for two bulls. The top priced animal was judged second in the unled section of the show field in conjunction with the sale. Mr D. Kilgour, from near Ashurst, who judged the Shorthorns, said it was a useful line-up. He selected as winner of the unled section and over-all champion a bull from W. G. McKenzie and Sons (Duntroon, North Otago) which, he said, was a good boned bull and solid right through. This bull and another McKenzie bull placed third in the class each brought $l6OO, and for four making from $950 the McKenzies averaged $l3OO compared with $1925 for six last year. However, \V. A. Austin (Albury) had a better average than last year with four selling from $6OO to $9OO and averaging $775, compared with $725 for two at the last Sale. C, C. L. Oldham (Waikouaitl) had one at $950. which was second in the led section of the show, and P. R. Jebson (Sheffield) one which made $BOO.
