Krishna nuns acquitted
PA Napier Three Hare Krishna nuns have been acquitted on charges of begging. The dismissal of the charges came in a reserved decision by Judge Imrie in the District Court at Napier. The three Auckland-based nuns, Linda Sullivan, aged 25, Susan Eirene Wilkinson, aged 26, and Lalita Sharma, aged 19, denied begging for alms in Napier, on October 19 and at the Hawke’s Bay spring show on October 18 last vear. The Judge reserved his
decision following a two-day i defended hearing last month. • He upheld the defence ■ case which showed that on- ! . each occasion the defendants ’ were collecting for a charity s — the International Society ; for Krishna Consciousness — and that the section of the Police Offences Act. under which they were charged did not apply to the collection of money fork charitable purposes. “I do not consider that section 49 (c) means that for ? this type of activity a per- f son should be deemed anidle and disorderly person,” the Judge said.., j
