Avonside I drew level with Riccarton 1 at the top of the points table in the A grade table tennis competition with a win over Riccarton U on Wednesday evening. However, Riccarton 1 has a match in hand, against Linwood. Both teams have 12 points, well ahead of the remaining teams. Avonside’s win was based on good form from Maurice Burrowes, fresh from his win in the South Canterbury open, and John Richards, neither of whom was beaten in singles play. Avonside II had a narrow win over Avonside 111, needing a countback' on games before winning, 17 games to 13. Avonside II led, 3-1, and later 5-3, but a late fightback by the "Golden Oldies” of Canterbury table tennis, with Trevor Flint beating Martin Kelly and Barry Radford beating Bert Thompson, meant Avonside 111 could draw level on matches if it won the final doubles. Flint' and Neville Brightwell did win but had dropped too many games over the content. Jan Morris showed good form to win her three singles matches. Points: Avonside I and Riccarton I 12, Linwood and Riccarton XI 4, Avonside II and Avonside in 3. Avonside II 17 games, Avonside
