Pyramid game
Sir, — The pyramid gamble (“The Press,” June 6), whereby $5OO invested could realise $BOOO in a short time with little effort, would reflect the mentality of otherwise normal people. To get a return of $BOOO for a $5OO investment means that 16 people would have to contribute $5OO each -to that one person. Each of these 16 people in their turn would have to have 16 people contribute to their anticipated $BOOO return. To imagine that this could go on ad infinitum, is stupidity in the extreme. It is a ripoff, and the only winners arc the few who start before the impossibility of the scheme is realised by the majority.. However, it. does reflect the profit motive at its worst, something for nothing. The legality of the scheme is a point. — Yours, etc., . J. SHARP. June 6, 1980.
