Tax statistics
Sir, — It is incredibly naive to :ugg»st that the tax statistics quoted recently prove that the South Island is not being ripped off. That 27.5 per cent of the taxpayers pay only per cent of the total.take could mean that South Island accountants are slicker, or the tax officials more generous in claiming and allowing deductions. It wouV mean that a greater proportion of South Islanders are eligible . for special claims, 'regional or export development ’ and so on. There are many other possibilities but one thing the figures do say for absolute certain; South Island taxpayers have. slightly lower, taxable .incomes than
the national average. So beware statistics. As H. H. Frost commented “there are three kinds of lies — lies, damned lies and statistics.” — Yours, etc., . B. W. .PATTISON, Hokitika. June 6, ICSO.
