Overseas ownership

Sir, — A knowledge of history is well worth while because it points out and illustrates the failures, successes and mistakes of the past and their consequences. One thing clearly shown is that- the status of people who lose title to their land to outsiders, degenerates towards slavery. The loss of title to their land denies the people any rights to the produce of the land and, in most cases, to the mineral and other resources as well. The pattern has already been set in this country, allowing overseas ownership of the land, and it will become increasingly difficult to reverse it.. Overseas ownership of industry is another source of economic anaemia; for example, how much of the value of 'this country’s lamb, pelts, and other products of the sheep industry, is still owned by New Zealanders when it leaves this shoreline? — Yours, etc., G. K. MURROW, Rakaia. . June 6, 1980.
