Doctorate in forestry
The first New Zealand doctorate of science in forestry was awarded to Dr G. B. Sweet, of the Forest Research Institute, Rotorua, at the University of Canterbury’s graduation ceremony yesterday. The doctorate is for Dr Sweet’s research into tree physiology which has led to improved strains of trees,
especially Pinus Radiata and Douglas fir, in New Zealand’s exotic forests. A science graduate of tha University of New Zealand, Dr Sweet gained a diploma in forestry at the Australian National University and then went to the University of Wales where he completed a doctorate of philosophy in forestry.
