Cyclists take to the footpaths

Increasing numbers of cyclists are riding against the traffic on the footpaths of Christchurch s one-way streets. “This not only looks strange, it is also committing an offence, and offenders will be prosecuted,” said the operational chief traffic officer in Christchurch (Mr R. W. Fox) yesterday. He said that riding on footpaths was a bad feature of the “bicycle revolution” in Christchurch. Old problems remained, such as riding without

lights and going through red lights, but no 10-speed enthusiast had yet been booked for speeding. A young cyclist was given a “ticket” in Auck* land recently after a traffic officer had clocked him at no less than 65km/h. Cyclists also had their own problems, said Mr Fox. They were vulnerable when riding in the lanes of the one-way system, especially at corners, and could easily be caught by traffic-light changes in the middle of wide intersections.
