Nineteen bouts on boxing card
Nineteen bouts, all but four of them between senior competitors, have been planned for the Eric Pocock Memorial amateur boxing tournament at the Caledonian Hall on Sunday.
The president of the Canterbury Boxing Association (Mr John Mitchell) said yesterday that it would also mark’the final appearance of the experienced light middleweight, James Scullion, who is soon to leave for Singapore with his army unit. Scullion (Woolston W.M.C.), a provincial representative in several grades, will however, be confronted by another very seasoned campaigner, Kevin Pyne (Richmond W.M.C.) Their contest is to be over four 2 minute rounds.
Another matching which should provide plenty of
action is that between Vivian Schwalgar (Barry’s Gym) and Avon Placid (Crichton Cobbers), two particularly powerful middleweights. The Papanui lightweight, Ken Clearwater, will be seeking revenge over Alan Clifton (Dunedin) in their bout. Clifton beat Clearwater at Temuka two weeks ago.
The popularity of boxing among Samoans living in Christchurch is evident from the inclusion of seven Samoan boxers on Sunday’s programme. Five of them will be representing Fidow’s gymnasium. and have naturally aggressive attitudes to their sport. Mr Pocock, to whose memory the tournament is dedicated, was a long-serving administrator in Canterbury and a former president of the provincial association.
