Robinson, Aickin eliminated
PA Hamilton Both Simon Robinson (Shirley), the top qualifier, and the youthful Phillip Aickin (Whitford Park), who shared second place, departed the scene in the first round of match-play in the New Zealand Amateur Golf Championship at the .par-72 Lochiel Course, Hamilton yesterday. Robinson, one of four players to be beaten at the nineteenth hole, was conquered by the steady Aucklander. Phil Reid. Aicken, in the last match of the day, was beaten 2-up] on the last green by the 42-year-bld Aucklander, Peter; Creighton, a former inter-! national who has furnished a! splendid record in tough]
Freyberg Rosebowl tournaments.
The challenge of youth has been considerably blunted. John Finn (St Clair) did not even qualify and Mike Atkinson, who partnered him to win the foursomes on Monday, was clearly beaten yesterday by Mike Neill (Titirangi), whose putting turned the game. No-one played better today than the consistent Southlander, Jim Lapsley, who overwhelmed Gary Ritchie (Muriwai) 6 and 5 and was four under the card in doing so.
Lapslev, eight times a Southland Freyberg Rosebowl representative, has made the long trip from Winton mindful that a New Zealand team for the Eisen-
hower Trophy in the United] States is to be selected sooni after this tournament. - I The Lochiel course is challenging with tough, driving holes, calling for accu-| rate placement. . and tricky: undulations on the greens,! making it a good test.
