Starting wage
Sir, — The problem of unemployment of persons under the age of 21 has been in the news several times lately and was also a feature of today’s F.O.L. conference.- . A big part of this problem > must rest with the unions for not allowing junior wage clauses in many awards. I recently made inquiries with the Labour Department about employing a school leaver under the Painters’ Award and also under the Carpenters’ Award.- I was told I would have to pay the full adult wage regardless of age. If any employer has to pay an adult wage he may as well employ an adult, as 16 or 17-year-olds have to be constantly supervised and taught from scratch. I have made some inquiries and find other employers in a similar position and who would take on school leavers if they could pay them a' sensible wage. — Yours, etc., A. ROBERTS, May 6,- 1980.
