Million-dollar race
NZPA Melbourne . Australia may hold the world’s first. million-dollar horse race at Flemington next January.
To be -called the Australian International 1981, it would be run over 2000 metres at standard weight-for-age. The race would be on Australia Day, January 26. The field would be made up of the 14 best horses, plus two emergencies,
from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Ireland, France, and Britain. The Victorian Premier (Mr Richard Hamer) yesterday told the state Parliament that plans to hold a million-dollar race were well under way and that there “was more than a reasonable chance” of the race’s going ahead. The stakes for the Melbourne Cud last year totalled 8309,000.
