Buller coal set to go

Westport reporter The first waggons of Buller coal for export will be dispatched from Westport on Monday. Filling of the waggons started yesterday.

It is believed that a full consignment of 35,000 tonnes will be loaded later this month, and it is hoped that about 1000 tonnes will

leave Westport by rail each day. However, the Westport stationmaster, Mr J. Cumming, learned yesterday that because of “teething trouble” at Lyttelton only 300 tonnes a day would be sent for the first week. The coal for the shipments has come direct from the Stockton opencast mine.

The last shipment of

coal railed from Westport was for the Japanese company. Marubeni, when 10,650 tonnes was sent over a period of about two months. The 35.000-tonne trial shipment later this month will be the first of possibly five shipments of Buller coal to Japan through Lyttelton this year.
