Detective to bring bail jumper home
A Christchurch detective will be sent to San Francisco to bring back Kevin John Miles, the former Christchurch jeans shop proprietor who fled New Zealand in 1977 while on bail awaiting retrial on drugs charges.
Miles had been at an airport to meet his brother when he had been arrested by F. 8.1. agents, said the head of criminal investigation at Police National Headquarters, Chief Superintendent M. T. Churches, from Wei-
lington last evening. Miles, now aged 35, had been positively identified with the aid of fingerprint files sent to the United States through Interpol. The New Zealand police had been Xold that Miles would be charged by United States authorities with being an illegal immigrant. “It will take some time to prepare extradition papers and it might be several weeks before he can be brought back,” said Mr Churches.
Miles was on bail of 815.000 when he flew from New Zealand to -Australia with his girlfriend after having changed his name by deed poll to Paul James McMahon. .
He had earlier appeared in the Supreme Court at Christchurch charged with possessing for supply hashish and 9000 LSD tablets with a purported street value of 840,000.
The jury failed to reach a verdict and Mr Justice Roper ordered a retrial.
