The Geraldine Racing Club has increased the stake for this year’s running of the South Island Thoroughbred Stakes by $2OOO to $12,000. The seventh contest for this spring weight-for-age 1400 m race will be run on Monday, September 22. In its short history the race has taken on considerable stature through the qualities of its winners. Show Gate won the first contest in 1974. Lynda Mary won in 1975 and again in 1977, and Mellseur won last year. The winner’s share of 'this year’s race will be $75(10. The winning owner will also get a free service to jtlae Strathconan' Stud: stallion Insolvent (by Busted), a dress rug and decorative sash. The breeder of the winner will receive a trophy donated by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, and a cash award of $250

given by the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. The Avondale Jockey Club provides a free travel privilege for the winner 0 start at its cup meeting December 10 and 13.
