Comalco agreement?
PA Invercargil l “Substantial agreement” on the power price for a third potline at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter has been reached between the Government and Comalco, Ltd, the main participant in the smelter. Both parties knew the basis for agreement, and the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) said in Queenstown last evening that he expected an early decision on the base price. He had discussed the
question of the third potline with Comalco’s managing director (Mr M. R. Rayner) in Wellington yesterday and he hoped for an early settlement. Although the final price would need to attract an early start to development, Mr Birch said, he hoped that by the end of the South Island power surplus period the rate would be back close to the bulk tariff of about 1.9 c a unit.
