Male abortion counsellor

Sir, —I would like to commend David Shanks (May 5) on the clarity of his perception and his acceptance of his natural limitations. As he said, “men no longer need to think, study or advise” on the matter of abortion because it is a waste of time. When men have thought about it they have neglected those whom abortion necessarily affects, women. When they have studied it they have looked at academic analyses of the moral, legal, religious, political and physical aspects and debated which psychological factors might be involved insofar as the predominantly male medical profession has documented its assumptions. On the question of their advice, surely nothing more need be added. Yes, this is one branch of human knowledge accessible only to women, no matter how fervently men may resist relinquishing their traditional and compulsive desire to control women’s lives.—Yours, etc., KAREN BEARD. May 5, 1980.
