Church union
Sir, —George Sweet (May -5) should realise that the plan for church union was rejected- by the Anglican Church two years ago. The proposal for a unified .ministry foundered at the recent General Synod when three Bishops voted against it and a fourth abstained. The four Bishops are not all elderly and they represent dioceses in which the majority of
clergy and laity do not support union with the other four negotiating churches. Four of the other five Bishops represent dioceses in which a large minority of clergy and laity oppose church union. The mind of the whole Anglican Church does not support church union. Now that the Anglican Church has severed its links with advocates of union, the other four churches can go ahead and unite. Anglicans have had a gutsful of the plan for union and the Bishops should concern themselves more with their pastoral duties to Anglicans, and their own church. —Yours, etc., R. BURNS. Lyttelton. May 5, 1980.
