Labour tip pledge
A Labour City Council would close the controversial Bexley rubbish tip in 1983, the party’s Mayoral candidate, Cr Mollie Clark, said yesterday.
If Labour had a council majority, the tip face would not be allowed to come close to Pages Road because that would be too near existing houses, she said.
Cr Clark said the eastern suburbs dump should not take any rubbish from the metropolitan area when tips of . neighbouring councils were closed in a few years. Under present plans, the Bexley tip would continue until 1986, when the metro-
politan landfill north of New Brighton would be started. But the City Council has already asked the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee to consider making the landfill start sooner to avoid more protests from neighbours of. the JBexley dump.
