‘Shambles’ denied
PA Wellington The Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) has denied an assertion by the University Students’ Association that the tertiary study grant scheme is a “shambles”. More than 9000 of the 14,988 hardship applications had been processed and the scheme had certainly not imposed an impossible burden on the department, Mr Wellington said last evening.
“The word ‘shambles’ can best be applied to the affairs' of N.Z.U.S.A., which, until mid-March, did not know that there was provision • for financial assistance for students over and above the basic study grant and hardship supplement, in exceptional circumstances,” Mr Wellington said. • •
