Charge of rape
PA Wellington A deaf'mute appeared in the District Court at Wellington yesterday, charged with rape. Charlie Haare Apatihi Wharehinga, aged 26, a motor vehicle assembler, of Titahi Bay, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to May 12 for a preliminary hearing. Wharehinga was charged with raping a woman, whose name was suppressed by Judge P. J. Bate, last Thursday or Friday. Wharehinga was a deaf mute, but could lip-read, Detective Sergeant W. Bishop said.
