No bribe probe yet

The Customs Department in Christchurch had heard nothing of an allegation that an officer- had accepted $25,000 in bribes, said the Collector of Customs (Mr G. H. Thomson) yesterday. The Comptroller of Customs (Mr J. A. Kean) has said that the department would investigate the allegation, made by a man suspected of smuggling stereo equipment worth thousands of dollars into New Zealand.

Mr Kean referred to a report in the Auckland newspaper “Sunday News,” which said that the allegation had been made by “a businessman connected with a sophisticated smuggling racket.” The businessman was not named. He was referred to in the report as “Mr X.”

Mr Thomson said no investigate was planned in Christchurch.

“No allegation has come to me, and we would need something a little more substantial than a newspaper report before we took any action,” said Mr Thomson.
