Northern Maori by-election
Sir, — In the decision of the National Party not to contest the Northern Maori by-election we witness the worst sort of political expediency and further evidence of that party’s shrinking commitment to democratic government. So, in an election they cannot win National supporters will vote against the Opposition and not for the representative of their choice. That the party turns its back on a large sector of the Maori population is merely incidental. The trend was apparent during the 1978 election campaign when Mr Muldoon boasted that there were large numbers of voters National did not need. Needless to say such a calculated risk would not be on under a system of proportional representation. Would a local National official care to inform your readers as to who in the party is responsible for the decision and how it can be justified to
supporters in the Northern Maori electorate? — Yours, etc., ANDREW CAMPBELL, Christchurch. May 3, 1980.
