Soccer rock
Shades of Elton John and Rod Stewart, there was a North Island v. South Island rock group and associated members’ soccer match at the Woolston Recreation Ground last Thursday, resulting in a victory for the other island 10-2. The North teams included representatives of the Swingers and Th’ Dudes, while some of the southern defenders were from the Newz.
There was some dismay about the loss in the southern camp after the match, which was not played strictly to Football Association rules. For a start, each side had 13 members, although as the pace hotted up the sides dropped to as low as eight
players each, and the goal posts were rugby ones. One of the South Island representatives, Martin McPherson, said both Phil Judd, of the Swingers, and Peter Urlich, the lead vocalist for Th’ Dudes, took some hard knocks. None of the North Island team could be contacted after the game, but they are all reported to be in a satisfactory condition in the intensive-care unit.
However, the South Island has a chance to redeem its honour when it meets the Crocodiles and associate members of the North next Thursday on a field in Opawa. The South will probably be tom to shreds.
