S.I. petition —2000 sign
A petition pressing for a referendum on South Island self-government has attracted more than 2000 signatures in Christchurch aftbr two days. Mr S; M. Andrews, Christchurch branch chairman of the South Island Movement, yesterday described the response as “marvellous.”
The petition was signed by more than 1000 people on Tuesday; its first’ day. Mr Andrews said that at times yesterday people had queued more than 20 deep to -sign it. The referendum called for would offer voters a choice between the political status quo or a federal system with equal representation for the North Island and the South Island, while retaining separate island Governments.
