Asylum sought thrice
The fugitive Indonesian student, Jose Satyadharma, who js still hiding in Christchurch, applied for political asylum twice before his present quest to stay in New Zealand.
A friend of Mr Satyadharma, Mr Garth Ritchie, confirmed yesterday that the Indonesian student had applied for asylum in August, 1978, and in August, 1979. He said that Mr Satyadharma had sent his passport to the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington to be renewed in February, 1978, and it was only after it had not been returned to him that he had made his first application for asylum. The passport had been renewed and returned to Mr Satyadharma in February, 1979. “He sent his passport in to be renewed again in February this year,” said Mr Ritchie “I am not prepared to comment further on whether he has had it returned.”
