Cronulla refuses to release Sorensens

N7.PA Sydney The Sydney rugby league club, Cronulla-Sutherland, has refused a request from the New Zealand Rugby League for Kurt and Dane Sorensen to be made available for next month’s test scries against Australia.

The N.Z.R.L. made the approach at the beginning of the season and has been gi en a firm “no” from Cronulla officials.

The club believes it will have two, and possibly three, players in the Australian touring party, and does not want to further weaken its premiership chances by releasing the two New Zealand forwards. Unlike the Balmain centre, Olsen Filipaina, and the Brisbane forward, Mark Graham, the Sorensen brothers’

contracts do not include a clause which makes them available for New Zealand test teams.

The “Australian” newspaper yesterday quoted the president of the N.Z.R.L., Mr Ron McGregor, as saying that the decision to app.oach Cronulla was “an attempt by the administration to determine for the selectors those players available for selection.”

According to the “Australian” Mr McGregor said he realised that neither player had an arrangement in his contract which required him to play for New Zealand, but he wanted to clarify the situation before the New Zealand selection trials.

The trials will be held in Auckland tomorrow, Palmerston North on Saturday and Christchurch on Sunday.
