1978 Telethon proceeds
Sir, It is almost two years since the public responded so compassionately ,to the 1978 telethon, proceeds going to the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation. The overwhelming response to this appeal was a great boost to sufferers who hoped something positive would be done to help arthritics today. It was upsetting therefore to read that to date only $600,000 has been spent (half of which would be interest on $3 million). While there is yet a considerable amount unspent, could I suggest that the Karitane Hospital in Christchurch (valuation $328,000) which is for immediate sale be bought and fitted out as a home for arthritics throughout New Zealand, who have no-one to care for them and who are crippled to such an extent that they cannot care for themselves. If the foundation bought Karitane it would still have more than $2 million to set it up and create a trust fund for the running of it. — Yours, etc., E. BLACKETT. April 14, 1980.
