Mr Muldoon’s report card
Sir, — My letter was not a piece of deliberate obscurantism as M. Creel asserts (April 9) but a statement of the obvious. I favour free collective bargaining by trade unions to enable the worker to sell his labour power for the best price. However, this concept only works properly in a free market economy where everyone would get the market rate for his labour. It does not work in our protected and Government-man-aged economy where th® dis-
cipline of the market is defective. Our standard of living has declined, but the only solution many trade union leaders have is more wages for everyone. We need them to show more restraint over wages and more concern for increased productivity. If they ean offer a lead and use their considerable influence towards this end, we could avoid the corrosive effect of inflation on the economy and get off the treadmill of higher prices following higher wages etc, —Yours, etc., F. ROBINSON.: April 13, 1980. '
