No charges yet against Russian woman

PA Wellington The Wellington police are continuing investigations into alleged shoplifting charges concerning a female staff member of the Soviet Embassy. The woman was interviewed by the police at a Karori supermarket on Tuesday afternoon, but no charges were laid.

The police yesterday talked to the manager and staff of the supermarket, and store detectives who allegedly saw the woman taking goods. Foreign Affairs officials were checking whether the woman, who said that she was a doctor, could claim immunity from arrest and detention under the Diplomatic Privileges and Immunity Act.

A decision on whether the police consider grounds exist for prosecution will probably be made today.
