Safer crossing move
A plan for improving | pedestrian crossing safety in; Cathedral Square, between the Bank of New Zealand and the United Service Hotel, was proposed by the Christchurch City Council works and traffic committee yesterday.
A much wider crossing, fanning out to the Square from the back corner, has been proposed. 1
The Colombo Street footpath would also be widened, and the Square’s pedestrian area expanded into a curve near the hotel.
Later, when the Cashel Street-High Street pedestrian mall is built, the five pedestrian crossing corners nearby — at the junction of Hereford Street, Colombo Street, and High Street — will be linked by a Barnes Dance traffic signal phase.
