Swimmers perform well
Canterbury swimmers returned from the New Zealand synchronised swimming championships in Auckland at the week-end with a nearperfect record. Wendy Anink, a New Zealand representative, beat Karen Gunby, of Southland, also a national representative, to win the open solo competition. Miss Anink scored 78.27 in the figures competition and 78.6 for her routine, a total of 156.87. Miss Gunby was second with 150.3 points. Joanne McDougall won the intermediate solo event with 106.15 points, and another Canterbury girl, Hilary Boyce was second with 102.14 points. Miss McDougall combined with Cathy Duncan to win the intermediate duet with
106.28 points, and Sarah McDougall won the junior!; solo title with 103.41 points, fractionally ahead of Lindas Breekveldt (Auckland).- Sarah McDougall combined with Kim Barritt to win the junior duet with 94.28 pointsa The coach of the team, Mrs M.- Potts, said that the standard of swimming was very good and the competitors were trying more daring moves than they would have attempted a year ago. , Mrs Potts put the improvement down to the influence of the Pan Pacific championships held in Christchurch in November, where the Canterbury girls in particular learned much from watching the world’s best swimmers.
