Conservation levy

Sir, — Enough of the cosmetics. Conservationists are grateful to Dr Shearer for his dedication, but cannot forget that he remains a member of a Government that has made the word Whirinaki synonymous with political deception. Are we now so contemptuous of our responsibilities that we would rather rely on levies from overseas corporations? Are we expected to applaud departmental shufflings that do nothing to enhance the status of the environment portfolio? With the increased availability of exotic timber in 10 years time there will

no longer be any justification for further logging of native forest on Crown land. The- way will be clear to structure a powerful Department of the Environment in its own right, to embrace the environmental forestry activities of the Forest Service, the protection forestry division of the Forest Research Institute, the Wildlife Service, the National Parks Authority, the Water and Soil Division of the Ministry of Works. If Dr Shearer’s “precipice of extinction” has not already been reached. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT* April 8,1980.
