Urban tavern hours

Sir, — One important aspect of the new urban tavern concept idea which is evolving in communities in Christchurch is hours of service. In other countries where social problems exist too, the first priority has been given to the social circumstance of the community. Longer hours, mid-day or afternoon breaks, all have worked differently in England and Scotland, for example. No other country need necessarily be an improvement on present-day circumstance but when Alcoholics Anonymous, ambulance, hospital and paramedic services and a wide body of public opinion get together to compare our 6 o’clock swill with the present 10, one conclusion may be reached. However, Scotland has not pioneered the fam-ily-food-tavern idea and it seems that all countries including New Zealand could learn from others. It is desirable that New Zealand could first research, pioneer a first in social behaviour that would be a model for the world and of benefit to the community it services. — Yours, etc., GRAEME STANLEY.
