Lead in petrol

Sir, —Although I share J. H. Campbell’s concern (April 15) about high lead levels in children’s teeth, it is probably ' presumptuous to label lead contained in petrol as the culprit. It is true . that combustion of leaded petrol increases lead levels in the atmosphere but there is no evidence that this lead i.*j actually absorbed after inhalation. The sources we should be concerned about are old houses with flaking paint and the soil surrounding those houses. It is children’s habits of placing . objects in their mouths with particular regard to soil and paint flakes which leads to potentially dangerous levels of lead in the body. — Yours, etc G. M. JEFFERY. April 7, 1980.
