Use of Q.E.II Park
Sir, — The 1971 City Council election was conducted against a background of great enthusiasm for holding . the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. The expensive and abrupt, des-: truction; of the Centennial Pool seemed to me to be a manoeuvre to fqrce a particular decision oh the voters before the election was held. There had just been an illegal attempt to bulldoze' the road through Hagley Park and everything seemed * part of a pattern. Now the city should try to make both the Town Hall and the Queen Elizabeth II Park complex a success, and I suggest both sides should act accordingly and avoid recriminations about events that are history. The question I would ask all council candidates is whether it would be advantageous to incorporate a skating rink at Queen Elizabeth II Park, cut heating costs and increase attendance at the same time? But please, no overseas trips on this account. — Yours, etc. PATRICK NEARY, April 8, 1980.
