New ferry link

Sir, — Along with all concerned South Island people I trust that the Lyttelton Harbour Board will co-oper-ate with the railways in

an effort to get a passengercargo ship on the Welling-ton-Lyttelton run again.“The Press” report that “Board members had reservations about the scheme,’’ filled me with apprehension, and left the impression that a lack of enthusiasm could damn the project before it got off the ground. The interisland ferry terminal in Wellington, for the traditional Wellington-Lyttelton link, is idle and deserted; any sort of service is preferable to this barren state, and board members, both in Lyttelton and Wellington, must be realistic and approach the problem in a spirit bf conciliation and helpfulness. I am convinced that neither the Lyttelton nor the Wellington Harbour boards fought hard enough for the retention of the Rangatira, and took the Muldoon Government’s decision to axe the service with passive resignation. — Yours, etc., I. MACKAY. Lower Hutt.' April 9, 1980.
