Territorial soldiers praised
NZPA Singapore A month-long tour of duty with the New Zealand Force in South-East Asia carried out by about 100 members of the Territorial Force from the South Island has earned them praise from military professionals. Brigadier John Mace, commanding officer of the New Zealand Force, said the Territorials had worked extremely hard and shown a high standard of proficiency. “They came from all walks of life and some had not even flown, or been outside New Zealand before but they worked hard and did very well,” he said.
The group, consisting of 97 Territorial soldiers, plus Regular Force radio operators and Territorial officers, was drawn from the 4th (Otago-Southland) Battalion and the 2nd (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast) Battalion. The group was commanded by a Territorial officer, Captain Roydon Davies, who is a Lyttelton policeman. The unit returned to New Zealand last week.
