Transcendental meditation schools
Sir, — A. Le Cren’s letter (March 31) on transcendental meditation schools makes me wonder exactly how much he knows about the transcendental meditation technique and programme. He says rather blandly, “Research has conclusively proved that many people’s minds, after T.M., have suffered from demonic possession.” What research? If he had done his homework properly on T.M., he would be aware of at least 41 published research studios documenting the physical and psychological benefits of
transcendental meditation, and dealing specifically with therapeutic aid for psychiatric patients, reduced depression and neuroticism and increased stability of the nervous system. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi teaches that it is possible through the T.M. technique to attain a state of perfect physical -and mental health in which a person’s mind and nervous system can function at full potential. This is far from the “mindless state . . . filled with something horrible, for life,” of Mr Le Cren’s letter. If anything, the' research of Bloomfield, Cain, Jaffe and Kory conclusively proves the opposite.—Yours, etc., J. W. RODGER. March 31, 1980. Sir, —A. Le Cren (March 31) says that it would be “barbaric” to subject our youth to transcendental meditation because they, would be venturing into “the Devil’s , domain.” .Subh superstition ’is what comes from people who fear the unknown so that it is a case of do not criticise what you cannot . understand. What “research” confirmed that T.M. resulted- m in- “demonic possession” to many people’s minds? Thorough research New York shows that not only is concentration increased for better work in and out of school but the negative emotions subside. When I meditate I experience the love of God flowing through me to expand my mind to meet Him. The only way to understand meditation is to participate in it. —Yours, etc.,
PAUL J. LECK. March 31, 1980.
