Catholic school finances

Sir, — Joyce Sumpter (March 27) is offended by my statement that Catholics use abortion and contraceptive services as much as the rest of the population. A study entitled “Contraceptive Practice Among New Zealand Women” was published last year in the. New Zealand Medical Journal by Kirkwood, Facer, Lawrence and Hunton. They found “those with no religious affiliation and Roman Catholics showed the highest use of contraceptives and ’ favoured ' adequate techniques.ln comparison, in 1956 Siegel found no significant difference between religious groups in use of contraception. The report of the Royal Commission on C, S. and A. (p 177 says that the only figures available on religions of abortion patients come from the Auckland Medical Aid ; Trust. They were: Protestants 59 per cent, Catholics 16 per cent, others 26 per cent. The proportions of these groups in the population were 64 per cent, 16 per cent and 21 per cent . respectively.— Yours, etc.,

ALAN WILKINSON. March 27, 1980.
