Casinos in N.Z.
Sir, — Mr Haddad of the national Travel Association, i suggests that a casino will bring employment opportunities and money-spending on services. Taxpayers may well wonder whether all the police, traffic and social welfare extra work generated will be employment at their expense but, even supposing that this is avoided, if the net result of a casino is damage to the over-all community welfare then all employment deriving from it is misdirected employment and all substance used is waste, tragic waste since it results in not merely a nil return but a loss. Not the smallest loss would be that many should become content to be employed in non-productive and even counter-productive employment. Even in a time of un-. employment employment is better foregone than found in degrading pursuit* — Yours, etc* ALEX WATSON* March 27, 1980, ..
