Air pollution

Sir, — I.have been interested and concerned about pollution in all its forms for years. When the assumption was first made that coal fires are a major pollution hazard, I decided the best method of. checking this theory was to gather the figures on consumption of fuels. Having checked the figures on use of coal, coke, L.P.G. fuel oils, diesel and petrol and the motor vehicle registrations over the last 15 years I came to an entirely different conclusion from the Clear Air Society. The major pollution causes appear to be fuel oils, diesel and petrol. So I think the Arabs are doing us a good turn. I suffer from sinus problems and consequently am sensitive to

smoke pollution. 1 find my two biggest problems ' are the gasworks and cigarette smoke. Of these two I consider cigarette smoke the greatest personal polluter. — Yours, etc.,
