Club drinking

Sir, — I object to the reported statement of Mr J. H. Elworthy, member of Parliament, that “club drinking ‘is what people want’.” What people? Certainly not the ratepayers of Christchurch who contribute to the upkeep of reserve land and derive no benefit from their rates where the reserve lands are leased to these sports (?) clubs and denied to the ordinary citizen. A similar statement was made that taverns were “wanted by the people.” It has been proved fairly conclusively that people do not want, taverns and Mr Elworthy should not presume to speak for the populace unless he has complete authority to do so. — Yours, etc., MRS M. A. HOGAN. March 27, 1980.
