Christchurch bus service

Sir, — I strongly disagree with your claim that “little can be done economically to increase the frequency of bus services . . .”, though I certainly agree that it is essential that that occur. In an analysis of timetables for two routes that I did early in 1979, I found that the time waste by drivers because of the present dispatch system and other inefficiencies amounted to between 29.2 per cent (Monday to Thursday, after 6 p.m.) and 44.2 per cent (Sunday).Over all, on the PapanuiCashmere route, lay-over time at termini amounted to 29.6 per cent of total paid time. As drivers’ wages amount to 70 per cent of the board’s running costs, considerable waste is involved at present. It is Labour policy to remove these inefficiencies and increase the frequency of the service. I also query vour claim that earless days are “an equaliser of society” and request supporting evidence. —- Yours, etc., T. N. D. ANDERSON, Labour member, Christchurch Transport Board.
