Tanker blast feared

Firemen sprayed foam over a Mobil fuel tanker and trailer after the unit had broken an axle at the intersection of Pages Road and Bexley Road about 8.20 p.m. vesterday. The tanker was empty, which had increased the risk of an explosion, a Fire Service spokesman said. Ministry of Transport officers were called in to divert traffic. The tanker and trailer were later escorted by a fire engine and a traffic‘patrol car as it was towed to a Mobil depot in Chapmans Road, Heathcote. At 9.15 p.m. firemen were called to a fire in a forklift machine at the McVicar Timber Company’s yard in Johns Road, Harewood. The machine was destroyed.
