Iraqi protest

PA Auckland The Iraqi Minister of Trade (Mr Hassan Ali) last evening warned New Zealand not to take part in a United States-planned Indian Ocean rapid deployment force.

Participation would be regarded as an “unfriendly act” towards Arab countries and would have consequences for New Zealand’s Arab markets, he said.

“It would please us if you take no action in this respect since this would be an aggressive force,” he said. Last week when the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr

Taiboys) returned from an overseas tour he said that the United States would like to see New Zealand do more in defence. A commitment had been given to provide ships and aircraft for Indian Ocean forces, although not a large one.

“Indeed the circumstance under which there will be that call have yet to arise,” he said.

The commitment was to provide ships and aircraft on a “when able” basis. No request had been made for New Zealand troops to help form the United States - planned Indian Ocean rapid deployment force.
